Your First Exam

Our treatment options include traditional braces, ceramic braces and Invisalign®. During initial exams, which are free, Dr. Buxton will conduct a thorough examination. He will recommend and discuss the type and length of the treatment that best suits your case. If you decide to begin treatment at this exam, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to begin records and get you in braces. Insurance and financing will also be discussed at this time.

After your first exam, the staff will work hard to best meet your schedule, including early hours and some evening hours. An appointment to place brackets will generally take one to two hours. Adjustments after that will be scheduled for every six weeks and will take approximately thirty minutes.

Continued Care

Once your braces are off, we will schedule a follow-up appointment. This appointment just lets us make sure that your treatment is lasting and working for you. If you ever have any additional questions about your smile, feel free to give us a call.

These metal brackets are the most basic option, they are relatively small and strong.

Dental braces

Ceramic brackets are a clear alternative to traditional braces.

Invisalign is system of hard plastic trays that gradually move your teeth.

Most emergencies—such as pain, loose brackets or poking wires—can be avoided with proper care and attention to your braces while you’re in treatment. The biggest things you can do to make sure your orthodontic treatment goes smoothly is to avoid hard and chewy foods such as hard candies, chips and, yes, raw carrots. Most emergencies can be handled at home, but it’s a good idea to call into the office to check to see if you can wait to your next visit or need to come in right away.

Broken brackets

Broken or loose brackets often are caused by eating chewy or hard foods, which is why we recommend staying away from those foods while in treatment. If a bracket does come loose, please contact us as soon as possible and we’ll get you scheduled for an appointment to reattach the bracket. Leaving a bracket unattached can slow treatment.

Poking wires

Wires can sometimes pop out of brackets and their sharp or pokey ends can become very uncomfortable. If this happens,  please call us and we’ll walk you through ways to lessen any possible discomfort until you can come in and we’ll get it fixed.

Experiencing some soreness is a normal result of your teeth moving during treatment–especially during the early stages. Over-the-counter painkillers can remedy the problem. Sore cheeks from the rubbing of the metal brackets can also be uncomfortable. We provide wax that can be put over them. If you run out, it’s carried by most drugstores.

After-hours contact

If you need immediate help and our office is closed, you can reach one of our team members after hours by calling 503-757-3783.
